SKINCARE

When I became pregnant I really wanted to overhaul my beauty routine because there were things I was using that I didn’t feel comfortable with. Your skin can absorb so many chemicals I didn’t want to put anything in or on my body that could potentially be harmful. Everyone is so different when they are pregnant, so my recommendations to you are to talk with your doctor and stay aware of everything you use so you know what you might be having an adverse reaction to.

To be safe the main ingredients you want to steer clear of are:

Retinoids

Salicylic Acid

Benzoyl Peroxide

Chemical Sunscreen

The products listed below are overall safe to use for pregnant and breastfeeding moms, but always trust your body, read over the FAQs on websites provided, as companies tend to change up their products from time and time. And of course, if you start to feel any irritation in your skin discontinue use and talk with your doctor.

So to make this short and sweet, my favorite brand to use during pregnancy are Juice Beauty products. They have a section on their website that is just for pregnant moms, so it makes it easy to know what is safest to use.

A must-have is a makeup remover or cleansing wipe because you will probably have days where you are too tired to do a full skincare routine. I recommend these from Everyone or these from Beautycounter. Everyone also makes a great ‘head to toe’ baby wipe that would be very gentle for your skin if you are super senstive!

For face wash always double check the ingredients, as companies can often change what they use. As of right now, I recommend the following:

Acure Brighting Cleansing Gel

Juice Beautys Cleansing Milk - The smell isn’t fabulous, but it cleans your skin really well

Honest Gentle Gel Cleanser

Beautycounter's Nourshing Cream Cleanser- the smell on this one is heavenly

Belli Anti Blemish Face Wash & Belli Pre- Treatment Scrub (*pregnancy approved product, visit full page on Amazon)

For a toner, Rose Water is a fantastic option. It is safe during pregnancy, you can use a straight up rose water or you can get it in a mist (just try to get one that is 100% even in a mist, if you can't find, get a spray bottle, like this one, and put your rose water in there for an on the go option!).  Rose water helps with hydrating the skin, and soothes any irritations such as eczema or acne.

Moisturizer, I say the safest is to use a pure oil, I like jojoba or avocado. Something that is 100% and organic will most likely not cause you to have any issues. If you are already really oily you might want to try researching brands on EWG. Some of their top rated ones are Beautycounter and Attitude. You can explore Juice Beauty recommendations for pregnancy as well.

Needing to exfoliate?  Highly recommend making your own. For your face you can just use some olive oil and brown sugar. This will clean up any dead skin and provide extra moisture! You can also use this all over your body!

MAKEUP

During my pregnancy I used Honest Beauty products. However, after searching high and low for safer face makeup after pregnancy, I found two that I liked even better and recommend now. Those are that  Juice Beauty and Beautycounter. Juice Beauty has a line of products which are easy to find on their website that are all safe to use while pregnant. Beautycounter has a tinted moisturizer (which I love!) and a foundation, Tint Skin, another favorite, mainly because it matches to skintones really well and is super light.

BATH & BODY

I don’t know about you but my body was CRAZY dry and itchy, especially during my first trimester. I used coconut oil often but you can also use olive oil, jojoba or avocado oil! I also took warm oatmeal baths to help the itchiness.  Be sure to talk to your doctor about taking baths, you have to be sure it isn't too hot. I always kept a bottle of my water with me during my bath and made sure I drank a liter when I sat in the warm water.

Pregnancy Body Care Favorites

Everyone unscented Wash & Lotion

Honest Shampoo & Body Wash - my favorite is noursihing scent

Beautycounter Citrus Mimosa Body Bar

DIY Coconut (or Olive) Oil & Sugar Body Scrub

Belli Body Wash

For stretch marks there is really no need to purchase any of the expensive products, the bes you can use are natural oils such as coconut oil, argan oil and olive oil  all can help prevent and heal stretch marks (note: don’t use coconut oil on your face, as it can add to unwanted breakouts!)

HAIR

Dry Shampoo!!! You must have a dry shampoo if you are pregnant, espeically if you are on bedrset!  Acure has a great powder to use for dry shampoo they also have it for both dark and light hair!  You can also do an easy DIY with cornstarch and if you have darker hair add a little cocoa powder to it!

For shampoo I used Avalon Organics Peppermint shampoo which is strengthening and peppermint also has soothing effect and can help calm nausea! Other favorites Shea Moisture, specifically Coconut & Hibiscus and 100% coconut!

SUNSCREEN

If you are going to be out in the sun be sure you are using a high quality and chemical free sunblock. My #1 recommendation is ThinkSport & ThinkBaby. Other brands that are really good are  Babo and Badger. Aveeno Baby, is also highly rated on EWG (2019)

The biggest recommendation I can provide for you is to do your research when it comes to skincare products. You can look up the products you are using and get ideas for new ones to try by visiting EWG.org
